Voices From Gallipoli

In 2004, Jim Haynes wrote and compiled a book entitled Cobbers – Stories of Gallipoli 1915, which was a series of first hand accounts, stories and verse written by men who were at Anzac Cove and by writers like Steele Rudd and Henry Lawson, from accounts given to them of the famous campaign.

Many of these accounts, poems and stories had been out of print since the 1920s and some, stored in the archives of the Australian War Memorial, had never before been made public.

In recent years Jim has written a series of songs based on some of the verses and the thoughts and feelings expressed in those long forgotten writings.

Now Jim has created a one-hour dramatic presentation comprising music, songs and dialogue that explains to ordinary Australians exactly what went on during the eight-month campaign that is so important to out national character.

Accompanying the dialogue are original songs written by Jim. Some of which are based on verse written on the battlefield or by other poets at the time. The songs are presented by Jim and young Queensland singer Katelyn O’Donoghue.

The script is still being developed as the play moves towards its final form. It will become a CD and a stage play over the following twelve months in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign.
